Good Pain And A Small World

Ols shared his thoughts after leaving, Body Leadership donated a treatment, another small-world connection appeared, and Michelle took me out for dinner and the thickest hot chocolate I had ever seen.

Ols had left Brisbane the day before, but he had a few thoughts to share once he had time to take in what the previous four months had involved.

This is what he wrote:

Thank you all for following us from the beginning, your awesome support throughout, and lovely farewell comments here at the end of my #HAA2015 journey. It has been an absolute pleasure to have been part of this trip, and it is Gary Wilmot that I have got to thank for that, so cheers mate! I have seen some of the most amazing sunrises, sunsets, landscapes that make your hairs stand on end, parts of Australia that most people haven’t. The 2 dead camper vans, the smiles, the laughs, the tears, the list of unforgettable memories could go on forever. I’m a bit lost for words at the moment (which is unlike me) but once again, thank you and congratulations to Gary for crossing this huge island on foot. ✌

I had a Body Leadership Australia appointment that morning. I had followed them online for ages, met Paul at the Gold Coast Marathon the year before, and Ange had caught up with me at South Bank parkrun. Paul and the team had offered me a treatment free of charge to help me recover from the walk and prepare for the weekend’s running.

They had even put a message on the chalkboard outside:

AMAZING GARY.
PERTH 2 BRIS.
HEARTS ACROSS AUST.

That blew me away.

The treatment involved some good pain, useful advice and a chance to catch up with Paul. I joked that the clinic was within walking distance, so I might book another session every 18 weeks or so.

While I was there, Paul told his next client what I had been doing. The client’s name was Rob, and he turned out to be one of David Alley’s best mates. We had been following Dave’s run around Australia online.

Michelle had already given me somewhere to live for a week or so. She then insisted on taking me out for dinner as well. I had a very good lamb and haloumi burger, and the restaurant owner, Jim, knew Rob, who knew Dave.

Small world much?

After dinner we headed to “Paris” for dessert. There was a miniature Eiffel Tower, cake, Brisbane at night and quite possibly the thickest hot chocolate I had ever seen.
