week eight: an extreme cutback week

A cutback week became half a week, but Sunday still included six kilometres. Watch on YouTube

Week eight was meant to be a cutback week. I may have taken that a bit too far.

After finally getting all four sessions done last week, I was hoping to back it up with another full week. Then Monday arrived with heavy legs and no energy, and the 20-minute recovery session didn’t happen. I was still sore and drained on Wednesday, so that session didn’t happen either.

Resting, on the other hand, was no problem at all.

I nearly talked myself out of Friday’s 40 minutes too. Eventually I got out into a very misty morning, with a few drops of rain, and did it. I’m glad I did.

You can follow the training plan on Runners Gateway, including the sessions I did and the ones I missed.

six kilometres at baseball

Sunday’s plan was a 12-kilometre walk. I woke up later than I had intended, and I needed to get my son to baseball training. There wasn’t time to do the full walk first.

The voice in my head had a convenient answer: it’s only a cutback week. Let it go and start again next week.

Instead, I put on the gear I had planned to wear for the 12 kilometres and walked while my son trained. I got six kilometres done.

That’s half the planned distance, but considerably more than the zero I was talking myself into.

So week eight ended up as a half week: Friday’s session and Sunday’s shorter walk. It’s not what I had in mind after last week’s first full week of training, but I’m pleased I got out both times when I could easily have stayed home.

In theory, I might be a bit more rested for week nine. I’m not going to tempt fate by predicting how it will go.
