Paparazzi, Podcasts And The Rainbow Sign
Victoria kept changing the weather as I walked through Dimboola towards Horsham. A Rainbow sign, a roadside photographer and a phone interview made it a busier day than the kilometres suggested.
Victoria was still doing a good impression of an English winter. Just when the cold, dark morning made me feel as though I’d been teleported back to the UK, a couple of kangaroos appeared to remind me otherwise.
The signs laid out Dimboola, Horsham and Ballarat. Dimboola had grain-centre signs, murals, a steam train and a name that belonged in an old children’s book. Then I found the sign for Jeparit and Rainbow. Sorry everyone, another “rainbow” photo.
Showers, flashes of blue, low light through the trees and roadside flowers kept me adjusting layers and trying to stay warm without overheating.
Then Paul pulled up and started taking photos and video. He worked for the Wimmera Mail-Times, and it was unexpected and fun. Ten years later I called it being hounded by the paparazzi, which may be stretching the definition slightly. I was still a bloke in a yellow beanie on the highway, but every so often someone saw a story and stopped.
Andrew and Sue from Partnerunning kept me company by phone later in the day. I was on a 10-kilometre session through Dimboola, talking about running, parkrun and community while the kilometres passed under my feet. The episode is still on Apple Podcasts.
The live update had me just under 55 kilometres for the day; the Strava sessions added up to 56.1. We parked at Horsham and would return to the finish point in the morning. Horsham Riverside Caravan Park waived the extra-person fee for us.
The day also gave me Watson Street, which I immediately decided should be relocated to Sherlock. Not every HAA joke was sophisticated. I stand by that one.
